Tesla, known for its relentless pursuit of better battery technologies, has reportedly teamed up with China's battery giant CATL to equip the new Chinese-produced edition of its Model 3 with LMFP batteries. This alliance is a testament to the potential of LMFP technology in enhancing the EV range while adhering to a cost-effective framework.
Following the lead, Ningbo Ronbay New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. unveiled its global development strategy revolving around lithium ferromanganese phosphate (LMFP) technology on August 24, 2023. This move signifies a broader acceptance and competitive race in the industry towards harnessing the LMFP battery technology for a sustainable and performance-driven future.
The company is planning to establish a capacity of 140,000 tons per year for LMFP materials by the end of 2025, and further expand it to 560,000 tons per year by the end of 2030, both domestically and internationally.
Dynanonic also said that the company now has built up production capacity of 110,000 tons per year of LMFP, with the capability to provide bulk supply.
The LMFP battery scene is bustling with activity, with a growing number of companies readying this technology for commercial use. As of now, some of the notable names include NIO, CATL, BYD, CALB, Gotion High-Tech, Svolt Energy and Dynanonic among others. The burgeoning interest among these upstream and downstream players of the automotive industry chain underscores the promising potential and broader adoption of LFMP technology in the near term.
With giants like CATL planning to commence mass production of LMFP batteries, and several other manufacturers and automakers in the process of qualifying this technology, China is steering towards a new era of battery technology that could significantly impact the global EV market.
